Booking a driving test in Sweden is done online with Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration. The booking itself only takes a few minutes. Getting everything ready first, and finding a free time, is the harder part. Here is the whole process.
Before you can book
For a car licence (B), you need three things in place:
- A valid learner's permit (körkortstillstånd). You apply for it from Transportstyrelsen, and it includes a health declaration and an eyesight check.
- Both parts of the risk education (riskutbildning). Part 1 covers alcohol, drugs, tiredness and risky behaviour. Part 2 is the "slippery road" course on a skid track. Both have to be done before you take the tests.
- A way to identify yourself. Booking online is easiest with BankID. On the test day you need a valid ID document.
The two tests
A Swedish licence has two tests, and you book them separately:
- The theory test (kunskapsprov), taken on a computer at a test centre. It is offered in several languages, including English.
- The driving test (körprov), taken in a car together with an examiner.
Most people take the theory test first. Once you pass one of the tests, you have a limited time (currently two months) to pass the other one. Check the current rules on Trafikverket's site before you plan your dates.
Booking on Trafikverket's site
- Go to Trafikverket's page for booking driving licence tests and log in with BankID.
- Choose the licence you are taking, for example B.
- Choose the test: the theory test or the driving test. For the driving test, choose whether you use Trafikverket's car (manual or automatic) or your own.
- Choose a language and the test centres you can get to.
- Pick a free time from the list.
- Confirm and pay. You can pay by card or by invoice. Prices are set by Trafikverket and are lower on weekdays than on evenings and weekends.
You get a confirmation with the time, the address and what to bring.
Changing or cancelling
You can rebook or cancel the test yourself on Trafikverket's site. If you cancel too close to the test, you still pay the fee. Trafikverket shows the deadline when you cancel, so check it before you decide.
When there are no free times
At many test centres the first free time is weeks or months away. Free times do come back, though: other people cancel or rebook every day, and those times go back into the system at random moments. They are usually gone within minutes.
That is why it pays to:
- search several test centres, not just the nearest one,
- be flexible about weekdays and times, and
- check often, or let someone check for you.
Drive in Sweden checks Trafikverket for you every five minutes and sends an email or a browser notification the moment a time that fits you opens up. You then reserve and book it yourself, in a few clicks.
